In our last newsletter we focused on Financial Habits and the effects they play in our life. Following along that same path I want to discuss the importance of ACTION. The best way to see how "Not Making a Decision, putting something off", aka...PROCRASTINATION, can reveal one's true character is through the story below:
TALK is CHEAP
Do you know anyone that "Talks the good talk", but when it comes right down to the core, they are not SOLID. They are more gold-plated or silver-plated, but not SOLID bullion. Ever looked in the mirror and seen that person? I know I have at times in my life.
Jesus tells a story in Matthew 21:28-31 about a man with two sons. When asked, one son said he'd work in the vineyard, but did not follow through. The other son did not commit initially, but ended up working as his father asked. The obedient son was the one who actually worked, because his father was not interested in hearing the answer he wanted as much as seeing the action he expected.
We are all familiar with the phrase "Talk is Cheap". We have all had times in our lives when a loved one said they would do something with us, but then they got busy and didn't follow through. Or you had a guest RSVP, but they never showed up. My favorite is when someone tells you they will call you right back and you never hear from them. These things may seem small and trivial on the outside, but they say so much about the CHARACTER of the one who has broken the trust of their word.
So what does the importance of keeping your word have to do with money? You can answer that question by simply looking in your checkbook statement and see what it reveals about what you truly support and value over what you profess about your faith and values. Do they match up?
The two best sources I have seen personally for monitoring my values are my daytimer and my bank account. Where we spend our time and money are the srongest indicators of what motivates us.
